[Update:] For the most up-to-date gluten free lipstick and makeup, subscribe to our Gluten Free Cosmetics List!

As the financial situation grows more uncertain, women are treating themselves to a new shade of lipstick in lieu of spending sprees on pricier items. A recent New York Times article listed 41 of fall’s most popular shades, and I wondered if any of them are safe for women with celiac disease (or their significant others with celiac). So, I’ve been working my way through the list, and I have received confirmation that the following lipsticks are gluten free:

Mark Dew Drenched Moisturlicious lip color in Pretty Posey, $6 at meetmark.com

MAC lipstick in Viva Glam VI, $14 at maccosmetics.com

With the holidays approaching, I thought that this list might also be helpful to people purchasing gifts for loved ones with celiac disease.

I hope that cosmetic companies will eventually include gluten plainly on the ingredient list, similar to what food companies have done. In the meantime, I’ll continue posting on this topic, and I hope that you’ll share information about any products you use with us.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Hello! I recently found out that BeautiControl has LOTS of gluten-free products in their spa lines and make-up lines. Their lipgloss is not, but their lipsticks (even the anti-aging ones) are GF. And they are not that expensive!

They sent their head of research and development to the Celiac Foundation to do research a while back. Since then all their new products are gluten free and when they reformulate old products they are making them gluten-free. I was totally thrilled to hear this.

Hi Staci,

Thanks for your comment! I had never heard of BeautiControl until my mom started selling their products a couple months ago. She is in the process of figuring out which ones are gluten-free, so your comment is very timely. Thank you for the terrific information! Are there any specific BeautiControl products that you would recommend?

Thanks, Brenda. We have a listing of Burt’s Bees and other cosmetics on our Gluten Free Cosmetics List. For specific information on Burt’s Bees’ gluten-free products, you can download this PDF from their website.

Burt’s Bees also offers many personal products, including lipstick, that are gluten-free. Their website contains a downloadable list of all their gluten-free products. I just visited their website, but have yet to try their lipsticks (although I love all their other products that I have tried!). Their address is: burtsbees.com

Hope you like!

I would like to know how to find out the lipsticks that have gluten in them, as I use different brands and I am diabetic.

Hi Marion,

I have found that it’s nearly impossible to tell whether lipstick contains gluten simply by looking at the ingredients listed on the package. There are two approaches that you might take: 1) you can start by contacting the companies that make the lipsticks that you already own to determine if any of them are gluten-free (this can be a significant time commitment, but at least you may not have to buy anything new), or 2) you can check out our Gluten Free Cosmetics List, which provides suggestions for products that have been confirmed as gluten-free in the past. Readers also provide recommendations of their own on this page, so be sure to scroll all the way down and read their comments. That way when you contact the company, there is a much greater likelihood that you’ll find something that’s gluten free.

I hope that helps! Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi -

Does anyone know if Her Glossiness lip gloss from Benefit Cosmetics is gluten free? I received the list of ingredients from the company but I cannot tell although it looks safe.

Let me know as I can also post the list of ingredients.

It is week 1 of confirmed celiac and I have yet to figure out my makeup which is fine but there comes a point when a girl needs to put on her lip gloss!

Thanks for the help.
