Milwaukee Gives Celiacs the Royal Treatment

New Grist

Drew and I recently accompanied my family on a brewery tour in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. I have to admit that I was somewhat reluctant to go on a brewery tour in a city so famous for its beer, knowing that I likely wouldn’t be able to sample any. However, I can now safely say that Lakefront Brewery is the home of the best brewery tour in the US! The tour guides were hilarious and provided a knowledgeable explanation of the brewing process from start to finish as we weaved through all of the vats and machines in the warehouse. The tour included frequent stops by the tap for refills at no additional cost. And the best part: Lakefront’s New Grist Beer is gluten free (it’s brewed from sorghum, hops, rice, and gluten-free yeast), and it’s terrific! No kidding, it’s really delicious, and instead of serving it in the small, Dixie-style cups that they gave the non-celiacs, they served the gluten-free beer in full-sized bottles at no additional cost. So, finally, I found a place where I not only felt like I wasn’t getting shafted because of my gluten-free diet, but I received the royal treatment. Thanks Lakefront!

Before you go on the brewery tour, I would recommend stopping by Roots for Sunday brunch-it’s just down the street from the brewery, and the food is fresh, locally grown, and delicious. I had the Three Eggs Any Style with Scallion Potatoes and a side of fresh fruit. The fruit was seasonal and perfectly ripe, and the eggs and potatoes provided the sustenance necessary for an afternoon spent sampling beer. We decided that the crème brûlée (also gluten free) may have been among the best we’ve ever had. In addition, the restaurant was beautiful, and the service was impeccable. Our waiter collaborated with the kitchen staff to provide me with several safe dining options in a timely, friendly manner. In short, it was perfect. Their website also features recipes, both of which are gluten free (as of today).

Dear Crystal, Thanks for your kind words about Lakefront Brewery and our local partners. Milwaukee has always had a very active and supportive community for celiacs- even before our introduction of gluten-free beer over 4 years ago. The Milwaukee Sprue Crew is celebrating it’s 26th year of eating well and bringing friends and families together. And it’s not just Milwaukee that has lots of resources for the g/f community. Madison is a great g/f town with bakeries like The Silly Yak and Molly’s bakery in Pewaukee and great stores like Outpost, Beans and Barley, The Gluten-Free Market on Chase and even Roundy’s Supermarkets, the big local chain. Great local restaurants like Roots, Tess, La Merenda, Transfer, Meritage, all work to make safe meals for everyone. So spread the word to celiacs: Wisconsin isn’t just meat and potatoes!
Sincerely,
Lakefront Brewery, Inc.

Orlando,

Thank you for all of the terrific suggestions! I look forward to giving them a try and spreading the word among my fellow celiacs. Wisconsin has definitely become high on my list of preferred travel destinations since having such a positive experience at Lakefront a few weeks ago. Thanks again!

Cheers,
Crystal
