Prior to being diagnosed with celiac disease, I did not demonstrate brand loyalty when it came to cosmetics. No less than 12 company’s products appeared in my cosmetic bag, each of which I had carefully selected for their optimal shades and textures (yes, I’m picky). However, following my diagnosis, I quickly learned that because my beloved lipsticks, powder, and foundation also had to be gluten free, I would need to begin contacting all of the companies represented in my cosmetic bag. It was a daunting process during which I came to appreciate companies that provide friendly customer service and accurate information. Of all of the companies I contacted, only Lancôme made a lasting impression.
Not only are the majority of Lancôme products completely gluten free, but their customer service is truly superior to any of the other major department store cosmetics companies. Whenever I have called, the individual on the other end was friendly, helpful, and understanding. Lancôme also tests its products to ensure that they are actually gluten free. If they don’t have information regarding the presence or absence of gluten in a particular product, they will actually test it in their labs and get back to you!
Although having celiac disease requires significant lifestyle changes, I truly believe that the quality of our lives should remain the same. I realize that make up generally does not factor into the quality of one’s life, but finding a company that was more than happy to help me find products that are safe and that I also actually like seemed like a huge victory so soon after my diagnosis.
