Five Tips for Planning a Gluten-Free Wedding Reception

  1. Find vendors that understand or are willing to learn about gluten free options.
  2. Don’t compromise your preferences but be flexible: have your gluten-free wedding cake and eat it, too!
  3. Plan an event that reflects your personal style-it will probably be cheaper, and you’ll be happier with it in the end. Be true to yourselves and your relationship.
  4. Stay organized by going into meetings with vendors with some specific ideas about gluten free options. For example, when you meet with the chef or caterer, take some recipe ideas for dishes that don’t contain gluten.
  5. Trust your vendors-no one likes a client who tries to micromanage every aspect of an event. It will be a lot more fun if you can put people in place to do the work for you.

The most important thing in wedding planning is to be true to yourselves and your relationship. Our wedding and reception reflected our interests and preferences (gluten-free food and all), and that made it all the more special to share with our friends and family. So, if your first date was at a pizza parlor, then share your favorite gluten-free pizza with your guests. If you like Mexican food, then have a gluten-free wedding fiesta. Similar to having a gluten-free lifestyle, wedding planning works best if you cast off traditional expectations and use your creativity to create a life in which you can fully participate.
