Untreated celiac disease affects the part of the gut that digests dairy products, making it difficult to digest dairy and absorb calcium. So, once you’ve been on a gluten-free diet and you can adequately digest dairy products, it’s important to make sure that you’re getting enough calcium1. I have found several gluten-free dairy products that I particularly enjoy, which are listed below.
Yoplait has always been my favorite brand of yogurt, and as it turns out, it’s completely gluten free-they even declare it as such right on the side of the container!
Italia string cheese is made by Shullsburg Creamery of Wisconsin, and it tastes great. Although they don’t advertise it as being gluten free, I called them soon after being diagnosed, and they confirmed that Italia string cheese is gluten free, and I’ve never had a problem with it.
I have a particular weakness for Haagen-Dazs ice cream, and almost all of their flavors are gluten free (with the exception of those containing cookie and oat products like “cookie dough” and “oats and honey” flavors). The frozen yogurt is a great source of calcium, and it’s much healthier than their ice creams. My favorite flavor is Haagen-Dazs Low Fat Frozen Yogurt in Dulce de Leche-simply fantastic!
Hy-Vee grocery stores have many gluten-free dairy products. Two of our favorites are the Mexican Blend Shredded Cheese and Sour Cream because they’re great with our fajitas.
I also love Blue Diamond Pecan Nut Thins with soft havarti cheese. This is another great way to get some calcium into your afternoon snack.
Finally, Anderson Erikson Old Fashioned Cottage Cheese is delicious, gluten-free, and makes a great light lunch along with some strawberries and pears. I hope you’ll enjoy these products as much as we do!
