Atlas in Iowa City: Amazingly Celiac-Friendly

Now that I have been blogging for a few weeks, it occurs to me that another realm of useful information includes gluten-free restaurant options. As such, my next few posts will review a few of my favorite finds-I hope that you’ll enjoy them. Drew and I live in the Midwest, so naturally, most of my reviews will focus on this area.

I’ll kick things off today with my absolute favorite: Atlas in Iowa City, Iowa. Atlas has the most amazing gluten-free food. Moreover, I never have to worry about getting “spelted” by accident. I can go to Atlas for lunch or dinner unannounced, and the wait staff understand my dietary restrictions (or at least know who to ask to make sure that my request for gluten-free cuisine is accurately fulfilled every time).

Atlas Black Bean Hummus is one of my long-time favorites, and I bring my own Blue Diamond Nut Thins for a gluten-free dipper. Atlas salsa is also gluten free, but I’ve found that I cannot have their corn chips, which may have something to do with the fact that they’re fried on location in a general purpose fryer. Naturally gluten-free dinner menu items include the Atlantic Salmon (my personal favorite) and Jamaican Jerked Chicken. In addition, the kitchen staff will modify the Creole Shrimp, Roasted Portobello, and Atlas Steak to be gluten free. However, the best part is that they have amazing gluten-free dessert options including Atlas Chocolate Cake (pictured at right) and Crème Brûlée. They have a terrific wine list to complement all of the gluten-free dining options as well as a fabulous list of mixed cocktails, including their famous mojitos, which also happen to be gluten free. I highly recommend that you check it out if you’re ever driving through Iowa (or even if you’re not)-it’s totally worth the trip. Enjoy!
